Reflective post

When I decided to sign up for this class I did not know what to expect. I took a couple of the other teaching classes already but this one I knew would be different. That made me a little nervous at first, I had to get out of my comfort zone. My first blog post was a little scary. I was actually freaking out because I did not know how to use blogger at all. My first blog took a lot longer than it should have. After the first couple post I became so much more comfortable with making the posts. In the beginning a post would take me three to four hours to do, now I can write one in forty minutes, and adding the technology components takes about another forty minutes. I am happy that it does not take as long. It is not because I started cutting corners, it is simply because I knew what to do and what you were expecting. We had a couple group projects in the course and they went great. The groups I was put in always had one or two people who would take charge and we would get it done. Now you can either get an okay professor, a great professor or one that you wonder why they are a professor. I was fortunate enough to get a great professor for this course. When I emailed you I always got a response, grades were always graded, and it seemed like you cared about your students.  The assignments made you think and I knew that I was learning a lot that I would be able to use when I become a teacher, for example a webquest. The first time I heard about webquests was from this course, I will incorporate them in my lessons when I become a teacher. I would give you constructive criticism if I had any. I had no problems during this course that made me feel upset or too troubled. The syllabus followed the course very well and I knew what you would be expecting. Keep doing what you are doing.

When I was reading the ‘One on one’ laptop section of the textbook, I could not help but to think what a great concept it is. Laptops can be used for so much in class. A lot of kids do not have any technology due to their parent’s financial circumstance. If a child cannot afford a laptop while everyone else can, I would not want that child to feel unequal to the class. Having a laptop will open the door to many fun activities because it will engage each student.

EME

Just like having laptops in the classroom, Ipads can bring a whole new world of learning. With Ipads children can easily work in groups, while being able to use interactive websites. There is an app on the Ipad to look at constellations, so you can make a fun lesson while learning about the stars during the day time.  Ipads also can easily go outside which can expand some lesson plans. I have talked about Google earth a couple times in my blogs and having an Ipad will make Google earth even more amazing than it already is.

Students know so much about technology because they are growing up with such advanced technology already. Talking to students about technology can benefit the teacher. I would ask what everyone knows and even talk to my students about anything that I do not know. Talking to your students about technology gives great insight, you can learn how the students learn concerning technology. For example, which device would be most beneficial for learning? Everyone would put their word in and you can set up lesson plans accordingly. Students will also love knowing that the advice they gave to a teacher was being used.

In conclusion, laptops can be very beneficial for a classroom. There are countless learning programs that can be used on a computer. Then just a smaller form of a laptop would be an Ipad which would be convenient for outdoor activities and engaging the students with a fun learning activity. Students know a lot about technology already so it only makes sense to hear what they have to say.

Digital Blog K

I have discussed Google Earth before in another digital blog. I am taking this opportunity to discuss further about virtual field trips discussed now in chapter six. With virtual field trips you can go almost anywhere. An interesting development of virtual field trips is that the teacher can put it on a promethean board so that the class as a whole can take the trip together. By doing that each child will see the trip differently in their eyes, everyone can share how they interpreted going to Lake Michigan or the Smithsonian. These trips will show students a life outside of their own and give them an urge to explore the world.

I have experience with online learning and virtual schools . I am taking a couple online classes including this one and a blended course. At first I was nervous about an online class, simply because I have always been taught by a teacher in an actually classroom. I think both in class teaching and online teachings are great ways to further an education. I do believe that there are some people who cannot learn as well online as they do in class. If you are having a child do virtual schooling I would track their progress. If they are having difficulties that they used to not have it could be from not being in a physical classroom.

With technology today it is easier to do things that we couldn’t before. Now there are educational websites, which can be very convenient. For example, a very popular one is a lesson plan website. A lesson plan website gives countless ideas and lesson plans with step by step methods. If a teacher is having trouble that week with her lesson plan she can just use that site and never have to worry again. You can even change a lesson that you like to fit the grade level you are teaching.

In conclusion, virtual field trips can take you anywhere you want to go. A fun idea would be to have your students write down where they want to go and put them all in a hat. Then pick one from the hat and that is the place where the class will be going. Online classes are very convenient; the concept of an online class and virtual schooling is not that old. It makes me wonder what else technology will do in ten years. Educational websites can benefit students and teachers in many ways. One I focused on was a lesson plan website. They are easy to find and can really help in the long run.

I was surprised and enlightened when I read about democratic schools and classrooms. I was so surprised because I never heard anything like that before.  Democratic schools and classrooms mean that students have a say in the decisions of the school, along with the teachers. Yes at first people will think they will just agree on everything that has them doing less work. I do not think like that, a lot of the students will give input on how they will learn more efficiently. That will help the teacher when creating lessons. It also gives the students a feel of equality amongst the staff.
Teaching with clickers is a 21st century technology designed for fast results, active learning, and student involvement. When using clickers in the classroom the students are more engaged than just a lecture. Making it into a game even can engage them even more. Also another beneficial factor would be that the students are not shy to answer because you cannot tell who had what right and who had what wrong; eliminating the scary part of being embarrassed in front of peers. I have taken a test before on a clicker and it gave immediate results, I took it and when I finished I knew what I had gotten.

High stake testing can be scary for any student. How do you properly prepare for such an important test? Participation systems like the clickers. You can have questions from previous tests on the screen and the students will be required to carefully analyze and answer the questions. An important part for the teacher is to teach your students how to properly analyze the question and to eliminate the wrong answers.

In conclusion, there are very few democratic schools. In hind sight though there are more than people think there are. Teachers usually ask every class how they can help further and ideas of how they will learn better. Clickers are a great idea when trying to engage your students in the activity. They are also important when studying for high stake tests. Being prepared will increase your grade tremendously.

Lesson planning is very common in the classroom. It would be hard to wake up that morning and think alright well I guess we will do this today. When you are prepared your class will be more proficient. There are objectives that the teacher needs to keep in mind. According to Transforming Learning with New Technologies, these learning objectives are: Tell who, is going to do what, When, How much or how often, and how it will be measured or evaluated. If you answer these questions you will find the outcome of what lesson you are teaching.
I was surprised to see that personal experience made the list of how to assess a classroom. For example, if I only did fill in the blank worksheets when I was young and loved it, I would affiliate fill in the blank worksheets in my lesson. I have had a couple great teachers and incorporating some of their teaching methods in a classroom would be amazing. I have never heard anyone say something good about standardized testing. Even if you do not agree with standardized testing, you still have to make time to prepare your students to pass. A lot of people want more than to just pass though, putting in the effort to really inform your students of what they are learning can go a long way.
There are a lot of benefits in being a 21st century teacher. One of those benefits is a electronic grading software. The electronic grading software can virtually record grades. There is more to it than just putting in grades. You can set up the percentages of what homework, test, participation, or even quizzes. For example, Homework can be 10% of your grade while tests are 20%, and the software calculates the grade for you. Another benefit of this software is teachers, students, and family members who have access to the student’s grades can see it instantly.

In conclusion, lesson planning is important when teaching. Knowing the objectives will give you a clear layout of what they need to learn and why they need to learn it. When I was in fifth grade my teacher put marbles in a jar when we were behaving well and when that jar was full we could have 30 to 40 minutes of play time. I will incorporate this when I am a teacher because I remember how fun it was to earn those marbles. The electronic grading software was a great invention; teachers will have more time on their hands. Also since the software calculates the grades for you it will be more accurate.

If you are a student or a teacher there is no doubt that you have either heard or used PowerPoint in your life. Using PowerPoint in the classroom is a great way to have students interact with their project and go beyond the textbook. No matter what grade you are in PowerPoint is a tool that you can use to your benefit. For example, you are assigned a project on whales. By using PowerPoint you will be able to use pictures, videos, audio and animations in your slides. When you are presenting your PowerPoint on whales you have a lot of information and can get your audience’s attention. This is because they are not listening to you just talk the whole time, your audience can have visuals and follow along with what you are saying.

I found alphabet books to be a wonderful way for students to easily learn their alphabets. An alphabet book is pretty self explanatory. It is a book the child learning the alphabet makes, the letter A for example would be a picture of an apple with the lower and upper case A. There will also be a sentence added “A is for Apple”. When I am a kindergarten teacher I will incorporate alphabet books into my lessons. The child made the book with pretty pictures and their own sentences so they want to read it over and over. They will also want to show every adult they run into, that gives them even more practice.

I was surprised to read about the benefits of using a camera with students. I was surprised by this because I always assumed that that was something to avoid. When I was in high school I helped out with the ESE students and they were very strict on no cameras. I know that you have to have parent consent to have any pictures of a child taken.  Cameras can be useful in the classroom. One of the reasons is, if you are doing a science experiment or anything that will take a week or longer to complete, you can take pictures and show the students how the experiment has progressed daily.

In conclusion, PowerPoint is a great way to be more engaged with a project and presenting can be less stressful. There is a similar version of PowerPoint now called Prezi. It works the same yet I think Prezi is a little more appealing to the eye because it is different. Alphabet books are a great way to express the creativity of a young mind. Cameras can be useful when doing a long experiment, and to see the progress that students make.

Having everyone in the classroom know they can have many accomplishes is important. Teachers have a lot of work cut out for them, from standardized testing to making everyone feel welcomed.  Multicultural education is significant in a teacher’s lesson. It should not matter what ethnicity someone is, that teacher has a job to educate them. Students are the future of America, how they learn will reflect on society. Technology is a great way to have a more diverse lesson. A teacher can use interactive websites to go to past events or current. The students will be more engaged with learning and multicultural education will be present.

Universal design is usually everywhere. If you go to a store and you see a wheelchair ramp that is universally designed for everyone who is in a wheelchair. Set ups like that are at countless places. An important place to have universal design would be school. Yes schools usually have a ramp or doors that will open if you press the handicap button. Universal design needs to be in the classroom. A teacher needs to be aware of the situation of the student or students and make changes to her classroom accordingly.

Assistive technology can be just as life changing as universal design. For example, someone who cannot see well has audio with her lesson. Assistive technologies are tools that students with any disability can use and prosper with their education. A student still needs to be challenge and be able to critically think. Technology can sometimes get in the way of that. In Transforming Learning with new Technologies, they talk about a speech software that students with motor disabilities can speak and their words will show up on the screen. Someone who struggles with a motor disability would enjoy coming to school more with that type of software.

In conclusion, it should not matter what ethnicity you are, you are there to get an education to better yourself for your future goals. Teachers can set up a more diverse classroom and use technology to have a more multicultural education. A student with any disability should be able to get in and out of the classroom. Also assistive technology is important to any classroom with or without disabilities. Technology offers so much to everyone, might as well use it.

The way people communicate in today’s world is endless. As a teacher I will be professional and communicate through, email, text messages, teacher or classroom websites, blogs, online discussions, and wikis. As a teacher that is how I will get in touch with others. According to Transforming Learning with New Technologies, these are the ways to communicate to other teachers and students. Having access for a way to talk to your teacher is an important one. When I am a teacher I want my students to be able to contact me if they have any questions for an assignment. To collaborate ideas and lesson planning with other teachers through a blog would be very beneficial for a classroom.

I have a couple classes that I have online discussions with. It is a good way to get feedback from other students and the teacher. In the textbook I found it interesting that there are steps to follow to have a good discussion. The ones I found to be most important were, to have an issue that the students are interested in, to have clear rules for online conduct, and to respond directly but tactfully. I chose these three rules because a good discussion includes being interested in the topic which will make the students want to say their thoughts about it. In a discussion the students need to know to be polite and respectful to others. The teacher needs to address what the student said and respond to the student without having the student feel incompetent.
The first time I made a blog was for this course and I understand it more now with some practice. Blogs can be a great way to understand other teachers or students point of view. Blogs can help a student or make the student more interested in the subject.  For example, as a teacher I would be able to make a blog about reading and why it is important. The blog can be fun and interactive. A blog for students to read needs something that will spark their interest to continue reading.

In conclusion, Communicating to students, parents and other teachers is an important way to go beyond the classroom. Every teacher wants their students to succeed and these are great ways for just that. Discussions online can be a drag but when the topic is interesting and people are giving their opinion in a nice manner makes discussions better. Blogs are a great way to inform people, express what you mean, and communicate with others.

Teaching problem solving with computers is a great way to really learn and get in depth with your work. With a computer they are interacting with their learning, the students do not only have the basic answers, they have a game where they will have fun while critical thinking is happening. In the text book, Transforming Learning with new Technologies, they explain how students do not need to think as much when there is a problem like 2 times 2 because they know the answer already. When they play a learning game there is so much more. It can involve searching towns for problems, conducting hypothesis, economic and social outcomes, and the text book explains how students do not get to have simple solutions. Instead they can follow the research process to proceed.

Reading over some of the learning software you can use I saw my favorite, Google Earth. Google Earth is a great way to explore the world as a student and see the differences between places. As a teacher I would be able to incorporate Google Earth with math, English, history, and so much more. For example if you are talking about Martin Luther King, you can take Google Earth and go to where he gave his most famous speeches. I shared this small piece from Storybird.

There is a difference between Internet based games and desktop games. Internet based games are used for educational purposes and are usually free. While desktop games are for educational purposes also, they are games you purchase from a company and take a while to play. They can both be used for learning, as a future 21st century educator my pick would be the Internet based games. I would want my students to get into the game and learn as much as possible from it, so Internet based games are not as long as desktop and I want my students to play the game but remember there are other things to do.

In conclusion, learning based games are a great way to interact with learning. The way people have been using and interpreting the word ‘Game’ is going to change. I think back to when I was in elementary school and I would have benefited a lot from learning games. Google Earth would have been great to use while I was learning geography, to see a visual of the mountains like that will make you think of the endless possibilities.

Digital post D

Being a college student I know how important technology can be. Technology has furthered ways to educate ourselves. An example of that is an e- book, an online book. I can personally say that e books are a great new advancement for schools. For my math class you are required to buy a program called “mymathlabs”. It is around 100 dollars yet you get all your homework, the e book, and many more learning tools. All I have to do is bring my laptop to class and open up the e book. I know some classes now have I pads, they are a great tool to use in the classroom. The learning possibilities of e books are endless. I can see the future as almost every student using e books.

I have always heard about plagiarism, through any grade. Plagiarism is when you copy someone’s work, word for word, and you do not give them any credit. When I write any paper I make sure to cite whoever and whatever I use that is not directly from me. When you write a paper no one wants to be told that it was plagiarized. According to ‘Transforming Learning with New Technologies’, a teacher named James McKenzie came up with seven ways to combat plagiarism and cheating when teaching. 1. Distinguish levels or types of research. 2. Discourage “trivial pursuits”. 3. Emphasize essential questions. 4. Require and enable students to construct answers. 5. Focus on information storage systems. 6. Stress citation ethics. 7. Assess student progress throughout the entire research process.

I want every teacher and parent to be aware that cyber bulling does exist. In my humanities class we saw the movie Cyber Bully, the movie showed what an impact cyber bullying or any bullying can have on a child’s life. When I am a teacher I will have a zero policy for bullying. I want to teach kindergarten so I know they are not fully aware of what bullying is. I want to take the time to educate them and let them know there are people they can talk to. When kids get older is when the cyber bullying begins, parents need to be aware of what is going on in their child’s virtual life.

In conclusion, e books are great to use for any learning experience. Regular books a great as well. Maybe more students will read if the book is on a tablet. Plagiarism is not something anyone should do. It can land a student an F on a paper. It is important to be aware of what you are writing if it is coming from an article or anything that someone has written. Cyber bullying is a serious event that can happen in someone’s life. I want to warn parents to be aware of cyber bullying and I want to be able to prevent bullying in any situation.

What I found to be interesting was the four teaching methods to actively engage students in learning, from the textbook “Transforming Learning with New Technologies”. Being engaged in how you learn is very important. That is where you will decide how you will really grasp the material. The four learning methods are: One on one tutoring, Learning groups, Inquiry learning, and Metacognitive thinking. All great methods on how to engage your students, I have some personal experience with the one on one tutoring. When I observed a kindergarten classroom the teacher put me in charge to help the students who did not understand the assignment. I worked with each student individually. Each child I helped seemed to leave my desk with confidence of what to actually do now. I will not give myself the compliment that it was because I taught them so well. Instead I think it was because it was one on one. They could not fully grasp what their teacher was saying when giving the assignment for the whole class. I know I really helped those children and when I am a teacher I know I cannot rely on someone coming in to help like I did. I will have to make time for the students who need one on one tutoring.Tutoring
What I thought to be important was the reading on digital, media, and visual literacy . Being able to use technology in today’s world can be life changing. It is more than just being able to text someone or look up information on Google. Digital and Media literacy’s can be used for so much. You can create whatever you would like on a computer; it goes beyond paper and pencils. You can be engaged in your learning, for example what we are doing for these digital posts on blogger. We experience new sites and new ways of how to use technology. Having Visual literacy can be a skill you will use your whole life for education. Visual literacy is used through graphs, charts, and the huge one that you see every day, pictures. Teachers usually use visual aids when teaching to have the student really grasp what they are teaching. It is a great way to burn that lesson into their minds so they can think back on that picture to help them with tests.

I was surprised to read just how much we are redefining creativity with technology. I have trouble with being creative. I have my moments but I see how creative some of my friends are and I think it’s great. Believe it or not technology has helped me become more artistic. Pinterest has the ability to give me endless ideas; I can put my thoughts into my computer by typing or for some instances just by speaking. I know I am not the only one who was helped in this area from technology. Many students have the ability now to be as creative as they want to be. It also gives teachers ideas they can use for lessons in their classroom.
In conclusion, there are four teaching methods that are great to engage students in learning. I went into the most detail about the one on one tutoring. They are all great. Another favorite of mine would be learning groups. I think putting children in groups is a great way for them to interact with one another and have their different opinions. Digital, media, and visual literacy are skills that you will use as long as technology is involved. To read over ways that make you more creative with technology was a great reminder that I can be artistic and use that for my future class.

Digital Blog B

When I become a teacher I want the satisfaction that my students have learned new concepts and will have a hunger to continue to learn. I could not imagine putting in all of that effort to have a student drop out. In chapter 2 of “Transforming Learning with New Technologies”, says it talks about how more than two thirds of a high school said they were bored throughout the day. I was in high school a couple years ago so I can say that that was an accurate statement. The text also states that a key reason for dropouts is because classes were not interesting or engaging enough. On this  Prezi are some facts about dropouts. Technology is a way for students to be engaged with their learning.  Technology is not the only idea to have kids stay in school. Having a friendship with a teacher can be helpful, it will make that student look forward to class and if they have no one at home to support them, that teacher will. I am not saying that if a student dropped out that it would be the teachers fault, the student has a huge role in that as well. If school was something to look forward to then I know there would be less absences and better grades. A way to do all of that can be technology, role models and simply having a fun lesson in class.

I am surprised about the lack of knowledge of some teachers when it comes to technology. There are reasons for that. Some teachers just do not have the time in their busy schedule to sit down and learn all this technology. Other reasons consist of the school not having money, also there are a lot of teachers out there who think that they have been teaching a certain way for so long that why would they need to change their ways. I can see where they are coming from if they have been effective with their students. On the other hand, students are growing up with technology and that is what they want in the classroom. They are use to it so they think that is how they learn in a more advanced way.

The concept that I found to be important is the National Educational Technology Standards(NETS). In the text, “Transforming Learning with New Technologies”, the definition for NETS is “A broad vision of schooling that features technology supported learning environments for every student”. I was happy to read that there are people out there trying to have the educational world use technology. They want students to be directly involved in learning. I agree with that and maybe one day there will be an advanced system that will be change teaching.

In conclusion, School is very important, and hopefully one day there will be no dropouts. Technology can do so much for students and teachers. For teachers to use technology though they need to be trained, that is up to the school. There are some teachers still using their own way and I do not want to put them down. Statistics just show better results when it comes to engaging students with technology.

Digital Blog Post #A - Chapter 1

Coming into teaching I knew that technology was going to be a huge factor. Any 21st century teacher would say that. I am not as

caught up in technology as all of my friends are. I should be, considering I was just shy a year from being born in the IGeneration time.

The way technology was advancing so quickly it felt that I was growing with the technology. When I was young, a game console

would  come out every year it seemed. There was always something more advanced that people would buy, they were curious and it

was the  latest trend. Being born in this time I was hoping I would be more tech savvy. Technology has some downfalls yet it has many

benefits. A lot of those benefits can be used in a classroom. When I am a teacher I plan on using to what is at my disposal.

As I was reading the text something caught my eye because I never heard this term before, digital identity. I find it interesting that no

matter where a teacher goes they are going to be expected to be a 21st century teacher. I know there are amazing teachers out there that

are having trouble with the technology, which is sad because it will be harder to get hired. Not only does a teacher’s digital identity fall

under resumes, it also ties into social media. Social media can be very dangerous for a teacher. It is important to watch what is being

posted. In the text book, "Transferring Learning with New Technologies" says how social media can be used in a positive way. Such

as, sharing what lessons were taught to the class on social media and parents will have a better idea of who you are as a teacher. Social

media then will help build teachers digital identity.

It is important to have the skills of a 21st century teacher, yet it is not all about knowing how to use the technology in the classroom.

As a teacher I will have to know how to apply the technology to efficient learning. I do not want to forget that every student learns

differently. In my classroom I will address all learning styles and incorporate them into my lessons. From the text, "Transforming

Learning with New Technologies", they talk about highly interactive and inquiry based learning environments. Highly interactive is

when you are using the technology offered to you while being interactive with the students and having them still create, process, and

evaluate information. Inquiry based means, as a teacher you are still preparing and delivering the lessons in ways the students will

understand. The students are required to think critically over the lesson.

In conclusion, I am glad to be taking a class that will be teaching me technology. It is important to use what is up to date as a teacher

when it comes to technology. There are so many possibilities for what technology can do in the classroom. When I become a teacher I

will work on my digital identity, by doing so can lead to more positive outcomes. While having all this technology is amazing as a

teacher I still need to know how to have my students think outside the box and to not completely rely on technology.
